Well, it’s almost that time of year again. Spring is in the air, bulbs are trying to poke through, birds are flocking…….but that’s not what Im referring to. Yes, it’s approaching the time for the dreaded yearly mammogram! All you ladies out there know my angst. And we all have wondered why in the holy heck cant they invent a machine that can do the job without deforming, deflating, disrupting, and degrading our precious female attributes. Yes, we women have also had that thought cross our minds…you know, if men had to subject their….well, you get the picture. I wonder if that would advance the invention process!
I would much rather get a candygram, or have someone send me a telegram. I once read where someone sent their sister a singing mammogram for her birthday – must have been a man. Ive heard them called jamograms, slamagrams and a host of other descriptive names. The fact remains they are a bothersome, yet necessary, evil. As the sister of a breast cancer survivor, I am repeatedly reminded that it is a drudgery worth doing.
You can read up on the statistics, hear the news reports, read the posters in your doctor’s office. But when it hits home, this disease becomes your personal enemy. We live in a world of pain and suffering and disease. All we can do is follow our conscience and personal obligation to do our part to prevent a killer from invading our lives, praying for God’s mercy and grace. Pray? Yes, I believe in prayer too. If for no other reason than to find peace in the midst of doubt, turmoil and fear. I also believe that God has and will continue to heal, comfort, and strengthen anyone who has been afflicted if they ask of Him.
So ladies, don’t put it off any longer. Make a date with your local torture chamber and grin and “bare” it. Top it off with a visit to the nail salon or chocolate shop – you’ll feel better. Set an example for your children and friends. Do it for yourself.
