I’ve been watching the movie The Sound of Music since I was in Junior High.
I can’t watch it without singing along…to the irritation of those watching with me!
I loved the scenes with the huge estate where the Captain and his children lived. The countryside was so beautiful and majestic. The scene at the convent when the nuns hid them behind the mausoleum stones kept me on the edge of my seat.
It all seemed bigger than life on the theater screen. I bet I’ve seen that movie a dozen or more times. I still love it.
A few years ago my husband and I visited Salzburg, Austria where some of the movie was filmed. We had an opportunity to see the church and mausoleum where the true story of the Von Trap family hiding from the Nazis occurred. I was shocked to see how small it really was. Even a bit disappointed.
The grounds were beautiful and peaceful and included a pretty garden. I tried not to let the vision of the movie dampen the experience.
So much for Hollywood’s creation and my expectations!
How many times have I let expectations ruin an otherwise lovely occasion or venture?
Why do we sometimes find it so hard not to project our prospects on our futures? Forecasting is a tempting thing for many of us.
There is something to be said for exchanging expectations for the wonder or surprise of God’s handiwork—His plan. It goes against my personality bent, but I’m working on it.
When have you been disappointed because you set yourself up with expectations?
Life is full of surprises!
Blessings!
I think we need to watch Sound of Music together! Loved the reminder to watch expectations. We should just expect the Lord to work in His way in His timing, instead of telling Him how to run our lives.
I don’t think the neighborhood could take our singing along! But it would be fun!
