When I read stories that have strong women characters, especially those from history, I realize I would never have been able to survive what they did. It seems to me that men and women were made of better stuff in days gone by. My mother lived through the depression and WWII – where she lost a husband, and hardly ever spoke of the hard times she endured.
Our country went through some terrible growing pains in the 30s and 40s, and women had to be extra resilient to live, let alone thrive, through it all. They raised children when there was no money, watched their husbands try to find work, sent menfolk off to fight overseas, and possibly served in the armed forces themselves. All while keeping faith in home, church, and country.
I admire that kind of women. Women with a special spirit and tenacity.
Clarissa Wilding is the character in my soon to be released novel. She too faces the worst of hard times in the 1930s American dust bowl. If it weren’t for her stubborn pride and bargain with God, she would have given up long ago. The relentless drought and dust storms that have taken over the Kansas plains, shakes her faith and makes her question her decision to stay on the homestead.
When her husband leaves to try and find work, she and her two sons must fend for themselves. Until a mysterious stranger shows up, offering help for food and shelter. His kind and gentle ways soon make him indispensable to Clarissa, and the boys grow attached to this man who always has miracles up his sleeve.
Clarissa’s long lost sister shows up from New York city, the local preacher has a peculiar way about him, the dust storms get worse…
You’ll have to read the rest.
The first in a series about women who find shelter under His wings will release this spring. Heaven’s Sky is about two women who find the strength to do what they must do, despite terrible odds.
I hope I will be remembered as a strong woman to my kids and grandkids. A woman who found shelter under God’s wings.
How about you….do you have the legacy of women like that in your family?
Keep reaching….and keep watching for Heaven’s Sky’s release.
